Our Journey
It started with a question
Terra Ceylon began as a university project with a simple challenge: find a real-world problem and create something that could make a meaningful difference. As we explored ideas, we looked beyond the classroom and into the everyday challenges around us. That search led us to a problem hiding in plain sight — the growing amount of organic waste generated by Sri Lankan markets. What was being discarded as waste still held value, and that sparked a different question: could we turn what is wasted into something useful?
From Waste to Possibility
That question became the foundation of Terra Ceylon. We began exploring how post-harvest organic waste could be responsibly recovered and transformed into a useful agricultural resource rather than simply becoming another disposal problem. The idea was more than making compost — it was about creating a connection between two challenges: organic waste management and the need for valuable soil inputs. From this emerged our circular approach: recover organic waste, transform it through a controlled process, and return its value to the soil through organic fertilizer.
From an Idea to a Product
As the concept developed, we realized that sustainability alone was not enough. If we wanted waste-derived fertilizer to create real value, quality had to come first. We began focusing on responsible sourcing, contamination control, controlled processing, curing, screening, formulation, quality assessment and consistent packaging. This journey led to our first product, Terra Green Compost — an all-purpose organic compost designed to provide a practical solution for gardeners and growers. What started as an academic idea was becoming a product with a purpose: transforming an environmental challenge into something people could confidently use to grow.
